3. Onions

Toss a whole onion in the fridge and you’re setting up the exact conditions it hates most: moisture. That extra humidity softens onions, encourages mold growth, and can leave them with a rubbery, off texture within days. Onions actually do best somewhere cool, dry, and well-ventilated a mesh bag in a pantry or a basket on the counter works far better than a sealed drawer. The one exception is once you’ve cut into one; a cut onion wrapped tightly does need the fridge to stay safe. Whole and unpeeled, though, it can last for weeks outside the cold.
