8. High-Sodium Canned Soups

A single can of soup can quietly contain close to a full day’s recommended sodium intake. As kidneys become somewhat less efficient at flushing excess sodium with age, that salt load translates more directly into higher blood pressure than it might have in your younger years. Canned soups also tend to be low in fiber and protein relative to their calorie count, so they don’t keep you full for long. Look for “low sodium” versions or, better yet, make a broth-based soup at home where you control the salt. It takes barely more effort and tastes noticeably fresher.
