7. Margarine and Hidden Trans Fats

Margarine and many packaged baked goods still contain artificial trans fats, which do a particularly nasty double job: raising LDL cholesterol while simultaneously lowering HDL, the “good” cholesterol that protects your heart. This combination makes trans fats one of the most damaging fats you can eat, and the effect becomes more consequential as cardiovascular risk rises with age. Trans fats often hide in frosting, crackers, and pre-made pastries under labels like “partially hydrogenated oil.” Checking ingredient labels and choosing real butter in moderation, or olive oil-based spreads, is the safer route. A little label-reading goes a long way here.
